Analyzing Your Club Distance Gaps

Distance gapping is the difference in carry distance between consecutive clubs. Consistent gaps of 10–15 yards give you full coverage of distances. Large gaps leave you "between clubs" too often.

If you have a 25-yard gap between your 3-wood and 5-iron, consider adding a hybrid or 4-iron. If two clubs go nearly the same distance, one may need adjusting or replacing.

Ball carry distance depends on clubhead speed, attack angle, and ball speed. The speed multiplier (smash factor) is ball speed / clubhead speed; for drivers it typically runs 1.44–1.50 (PGA Tour average 1.49). Ball speed × 2.5 approximates carry in yards for well-struck driver shots (a 150 mph ball speed carries roughly 275 yards).

Typical clubhead speeds and carry distances (approximate, varies widely by player): Driver: 95 mph swing → ~230 yards; 105 mph → ~265 yards; 115 mph → ~300 yards. 7-iron: 75 mph → ~150 yards; 85 mph → ~170 yards. These are averaged across amateur golfers; elite players carry driver 300–320+ yards at 115–125 mph.

Launch angle and spin rate interact: lower spin (2,000–2,400 RPM for driver) with higher launch (13–15°) maximizes distance for most clubhead speeds. Too much spin (3,000+ RPM) causes ballooning; too little spin causes early drop. Modern launch monitors (TrackMan, FlightScope) measure these parameters directly.

Altitude adjustment: air is thinner at altitude, reducing aerodynamic drag. A 7-iron that carries 160 yards at sea level carries approximately 172 yards at 5,000 feet (Denver) — a 7.5% increase. Add approximately 1% carry per 700–800 feet of elevation above sea level for most iron shots.
